What is Microlearning?

Microlearning is an approach to learning that takes small, bite-sized (and therefore manageable) amounts of learning to deeply engage the learner.

In a busy world, microlearning enables users to access quick learning when it suits them via digital platforms and devices. As the eLearning space continues to grow rapidly, so too has the rise of microlearning.

Microlearning for versatility and flexibility

Small digitally-enabled lessons (or small courses) can be accessed anywhere at any time, providing flexibility for access and completion.

Courses and modules may utilise multimedia formats like quizzes, infographics, videos, short-form articles, and gamification to boost the interest and engagement of learners.

Microlearning for employee training

One area microlearning is now helping in the workplace is HR training.

These learning experiences can be developed and rolled out quickly in the event of sudden organisational or regulatory change.

For example, an eWorks SME client requested the build of 50 small modules to build resilience to support their recovery after the COVID-19 pandemic – it was successfully delivered an utilised within weeks, whereas previous methods of onsite face-to-face training may very well have been a logistical and efficiency challenge for coordinating date and time of a traditional seminar or workshop.

Also, with the rapid shift of skillsets occurring in many industries, microlearning offers a simple and focused way for an individual employee to digest and learn a new skill rapidly, even if it’s just to remain relevant with up-to-date skills within an existing career.

For example, a graphic designer may take a bite-sized course in an updated version of Photoshop, enhancing their qualification and practical relevance to their role.
