Resources

Resources for Teaching, Learning and Assessment

The 2004 Resources for Teaching, Learning and Assessment (RTLA) Program consists of six projects focusing on e-learning resource materials for the VET sector. The Program aims to improve the availability, quality and use of e-learning materials, with added emphasis in 2004 on interoperability of resources across platforms and systems.

Quality E-Learning Resources

The Quality E-learning Resources project, which has produced the Toolbox materials in the past, will focus this year on smaller scale learning object developments. This includes the re-packaging of Toolbox material according to IMS content packaging standards and the development of new suites of learning objects in priority industry areas. The project also includes professional development conducted by Toolbox Champions in each state/territory, delivery trials of Toolbox materials for enterprises and for indigenous learners, documentation of findings from the Toolbox experience and an audit of Toolbox use across Australia.

Learning Object Repository Implementation

The Learning Object Implementation project will focus on the creation of a distributed network of learning object repositories in the VET sector, with a view to promoting access, sharing and transfer of learning objects. The intention is to work on four existing repositories (including the Toolbox repository) to develop a common services infrastructure as an aid to resource discovery, viewing and delivery. While the repositories differ in their initial components, the common services layer will provide interoperability functionality between the group.

Interoperability

Interoperability describes the ability to transfer and use information in a uniform and efficient manner across multiple organisations and information technology systems. The Interoperability project will maintain a website incorporating the VET Interoperability Framework, and pursue standards adoption in the sector including the development of a VET metadata application profile, and work on controlled vocabularies and core browse structures.

EdNA VET Online

The EdNA VET Online project will expand the range of VET and ACE resources accessible through the EdNA Online web directory of resources. It will address priorities from the 2003 project evaluation report to provide better referencing of VET content within the EdNA site, and develop more focused promotional strategies for different types of target users. New technologies will be used to provide customised information services and access tools for users, and consultancy for the sector on interoperability issues will be continued.

E-Learning and Assessment Strategies

This project will build an online gallery of sample e-learning objects including learning activities and assessment tasks. The aim is to expand VET practitioners’ understanding of e-learning formats and contexts, through a range of integrated activities. The project will trial and evaluate options for gallery samples to be re-used as templates, providing tested formats for learning design which can be customised with user content. It will also trial and evaluate the use of gallery resources in classroom and training room settings as well as blended and distance learning programs.

Management of Teaching and Learning Assets

This project will conduct an investigation to identify the requirements for the on-going management of the teaching and learning assets of the Australian Flexible Learning Framework beyond 2004. It will explore the potential of existing and developing structures to provide an effective basis for maintaining, distributing and managing these assets. It will work with other relevant initiatives and agencies to develop and progress the overall sustainability strategy for these materials.
